Preparation

Shake the bottle well before using.

Soaking the Coins

  • Use a plastic or glass container.
  • Pour enough cleaner to submerge your coins by about a centimeter.
  • Let the coins soak for approximately 15 minutes.
  • Check each coin to observe the effect. The duration needed depends on the coin type (bronze or copper) and the amount of dirt and verdigris present.
  • For copper coins monitor for signs of tarnish removal which can happen quickly. Avoid over-soaking to prevent patina removal.
  • For bronze coins dirt and verdigris are common issues and typically require longer soaks. Check every 6 hours for signs that the cleaner has reached the coin surface.
  • For coins with heavy dirt corrosion or verdigris soak for 24 hours then clean with a soft brass brush under running water. Return the coins to the solution if further cleaning is needed.

Tips and Tricks

  • For lighter cleaning and patina preservation keep the solution well mixed to avoid high acidity at the bottom.
  • For heavy-duty cleaning (removing corrosion verdigris) allow the solution to settle for an hour before submerging the coins.
  • Ensure both sides of the coin are exposed to the cleaner by either turning the coin during soaking or positioning it so both sides are submerged.
  • Stir the solution occasionally while soaking to help loosen dirt especially for coins with verdigris.
  • Keep a lid on the container to prevent evaporation during soaking.

Restoring Patina

Copper coins may turn pinkish after prolonged soaking. To restore the patina:

  • Place the coin in the soaking container with a verdigris-affected coin. Soak for about an hour then remove the coin without rinsing immediately. Patina should begin to return after 24 hours.
  • Alternatively evenly heat the coin slightly until the reddish color returns. If overheated dip the coin in the cleaner for a few seconds and try heating again.

Post-Soak Cleaning

Mint State loosens dirt corrosion and verdigris but residue removal is necessary.

  • Use a toothbrush or soft brass brush with dish soap under running water to clean the coin's surface and remove residual cleaner.
